Saina song ‘Parinda’: This sports anthem lacks the requisite fire

Composed and sung by Amaal Mallik, the song ideally needed a female singer to inject the correct passion.

Sonal Pandya

The first song 'Parinda' from the film Saina (2021) follows badminton player Saina Nehwal's journey to represent the country on the world stage. The visualization takes us through various stages, her physical training, her sacrifices, and her determination on the court.

'Parinda', written by Manoj Muntashir, has the fire but doesn't ignite the way that it should have. This was a perfect opportunity for a female singer to take centrestage, but composer Amaal Mallik steps up to the mike instead. Therefore, it lacks the required punch.

Mallik has composed a perfectly serviceable anthem, which matches the sports montage of Parineeti Chopra in dogged mode as Nehwal, with Manav Kaul as her coach guiding the way. But despite his best efforts as singer and composer, a female voice would have better suited Saina’s journey.

The biopic, directed by Amole Gupte, is due to be released in theatres on 26 March. Watch the song below and let us know if you are keen to watch the film.
