First-time director Trushant Ingle's Zollywood to be released on 9 April

The film sheds light on the zhaadi-patti theatre tradition from Maharashtra's Vidarbha region.

The makers of first-time director Trushant Ingle's Zollywood have revealed the release date of the film. The film, which was originally due to arrive in theatres on 20 April 2020, will now hit the screens on 9 April 2021.

The film is based on a theatre tradition native to the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. In the four months between Diwali and Holi, zhaadi-patti performances are staged daily all over the region. This form of theatre, also known as Zollywood, is said to rake in as much as Rs400 crore annually.

Ingle was once a child artiste associated with zhaadi-patti theatre. 

The film stars Ajit Khobragade, Dinkar Gavand, Asawari Naydu, Kajal Rangiri, Ashwini Ladekar and Anil Uttalkar.  Zollywood has bagged the special jury award at the Toulouse Indian Film Festival. 

The film has been produced by Priyanka Agerwal, Anshulika Dubey and Shashwat Singh under the Wishberry Films banner and is being presented by Newton (2017) director Amit Masurkar.
