Sameer Vidwans to helm two-film series on Jyotiba and Savitri Phule

Sameer Vidwans’s film Anandi Gopal (2019) recently won 10 Filmfare awards. The filmmaker is now back with another historical in the form of a two-film series based on renowned 19th century social reformers Jyotiba Phule and Savitri Phule, titled Krantisurya and Krantijyoti, respectively.
The announcement was made recently on Facebook by producer Ranjit Gugle who shared the title teaser for the films. Gugle is producing the films with Anish Jog.
Gugle captioned the video (translated), “A talented and sincere director like Sameer Vidwans. Excellent music composers like Ajay-Atul. A topic as great as the Phule couple. We have got a big opportunity through this project.”
Details of the cast are currently under wraps. Both films will be released in 2022.
Fondly known as Mahatma Phule, Jyotirao Phule was a reformer who worked for the eradication of the caste system and for women's education. He taught his wife Savitri, who in turn used to educate girls and is regarded modern India's first woman teacher. She is also credited with fighting for women’s rights.
Interestingly, actor-filmmaker Ananth Mahadevan has also announced a film based on Mahatma Phule's life. Titled Phule, the movie is set to go on the floors in mid-2021.
