The film will mark Suri's first collaboration with John. The director recently worked with Patani in Malang (2020). The production team shared pictures of the group beginning their shooting schedule. In the pictures, the actors are seen in front of Mumbai's famed Gaiety cinemas, one of the popular single-screen theatres in the city.
Ek Villain Returns was announced in January 2020 and has been scheduled for a February 2022 release. The makers had earlier cast Aditya Roy Kapur as the main antagonist. However, the actor later backed out of the project.
John will next be seen in Sanjay Gupta's gangster film Mumbai Saga, which is being released on 19 March. Patani will be seen alongside Salman Khan in Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai, which will be released on 14 May.
The film is being backed by Bhushan Kumar's T-Series and Ekta Kapoor's Balaji Motion Pictures.
