Shaadisthan, starring Kirti Kulhari, to be premiered on Disney+ Hotstar on 11 June; see trailer

The road movie, which has been written and directed by Raj Singh Chaudhary, sees a traditional family journeying with a wedding band from Mumbai to Rajasthan.

It’s an unlikely set-up when a traditional family heading to a wedding meet up with the band to travel all the way from Mumbai to Rajasthan. Kirti Kulhari stars as the lead singer of a band that gets entangled in the lives of a young woman Arshi (Medha Shankar) and her family.

The musical drama, written and directed by Raj Singh Chaudhary, also features Nivedita Bhattacharya, along with real-life musicians Shenpenn Khymsar, Apurv Dogra and Ajay Jayanthi. Kay Kay Menon has a made cameo in the film.

The trailer shows how two different groups of people, poles apart, bond when thrown together for a long road trip. Initially, they don’t have much in common, but as they travel, the band comes to the aid of Arshi who is being forced into marriage at a young age.

Speaking about her character, Kulhari said, “I could instantly relate to my character Sasha — an unapologetic,  strong and confident young woman who lives life on her own terms, strives to shatter stereotypes and isn’t worried about being judged by anyone. Shaadisthan is not only an entertaining movie but also holds a mirror to the society and the conditioning it imposes on people and how people live by it as if it’s their truth.”

Director Raj Singh Chaudhary said that the film is inspired by a story from his own life. “The movie is well-crafted in a way that the audiences can find their bits of entertainment while understanding an important social issue,” he said. “Each character in the movie is unique and celebrates their own individualism, and all the other elements of the movie are inspired by real-life scenarios."

Shaadisthan has been co-produced by Famous Studios and Opticus IN and is due to be premiered on 11 June for all subscribers of Disney+ Hotstar VIP and Disney+ Hotstar Premium.
