It is clear from the trailer of Dhulo: The Scapegoat that director Tathagata Ghosh has not shied away from depicting the pernicious manner in which patriarchy contributes to the spread of communal hatred. The short film appears to be heavily inspired by the horrifying public lynchings that have come to haunt the nation in recent times.

The story is revealed in a few harrowing shots that are set to the rhythm of an ominous background score. The visuals are centred on village women, played by Payel Rakshit and Shimli Basu, refusing to yield to their spouses who evidently subscribe to the politics of hate.

No matter how desperately the women express the desire to live a harmonious life in their small village, their fundamentalist husbands, played by Bimal Giri and Ali Akram, insist on attacking each other on the basis of their religious identity and diet. Both Rakshit and Basu’s character realize that no matter how circumstances unfold, as long as the hatred continues, they will have to suffer.

Dhulo: The Scapegoat promises to be an important work of art that will jolt the conscience of the viewer.
