American streaming platform Netflix came to India in 2016. Since then, it has made strategic forays in the entertainment scene and dolled out original programming in several languages. Now the streaming giant plans to set up its first live-action post-production facility in the country, in Mumbai.
In a press release, Netflix said the live-action and full-service facility will be operational by June next year. This will be its first fully owned, live-action, full-service post-production facility anywhere in the world.
It will have 40 offline editing rooms designed as a flexible, collaborative and inspiring environment for showrunners, directors, editors and sound designers to create their best work.
"We are excited that Mumbai will be home to this wonderful creative space, said Vijay Venkataramanan, Netflix India's director, post-production, in a statement. "This reinforces our commitment to India’s entertainment industry as we continue to empower creators with the best resources to tell great stories."
Netflix had earlier announced that it would be investing Rs3,000 crore in local programming over 2019 and 2020. Some of its successful original shows and films include Lust Stories (2018), Sacred Games (2018), Delhi Crime (2019), Ludo (2020), Bulbbul (2020) and Pagglait (2021).
Recently, the streamer unveiled 41 Indian titles coming to its platform in 2021. It also launched NetFX last year, a platform that enables multiple Indian artistes to work on VFX for titles globally.
"We are investing in the latest technologies and skill development through multiple certifications and training workshops in post-production, scriptwriting and other aspects of creative production," the company said. "We want to continue to contribute to the Indian creative community."
