Maadathy trailer: An unsettling exploration of casteism

The clip is rife with tension and manages to capture the scope of the director’s vision without revealing the plot.

The trailer of Leena Manimekalai’s feature film Maadathy sheds light on the dehumanizing nature of casteism. The stunning visuals expose the inhuman divisions that exist in our cruel society. We see a woman from an 'unseeable' caste hiding from a man because apparently it's forbidden for her to be viewed by the upper caste.

The unsettling yet evocative imagery hints at the film's dark tone without giving anything away. The distressingly eerie original score manages to get under your skin.

The trailer is rife with tension and manages to capture the scope of the director’s vision. Despite the evocative imagery, the trailer boldly leaves everything to the imagination. We also get a few glimpses of a young girl played by Ajmina Kassim. There is a foreboding sense of doom surrounding her character.

Maadathy will be released on Neestream on 24 June.
