A biography of actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty is due to be published by Rupa Publications this August.
Titled Mithun Chakraborty: The Dada of Bollywood, the book has been penned by journalist-turned-filmmaker Ram Kamal Mukherjee. The book’s announcement was made yesterday by the publishers on Chakraborty’s 71st birthday.

Chakraborty, a former MP, made his acting debut in Mrinal Sen’s Mrigaya (1976) and won his first National award for Best Actor for his performance. His first big successes came with the films Mera Rakshak (1978) and the cult spy film Surakksha (1979) and he became known for his dancing skills after the success of Disco Dancer (1982).
The veteran actor would go on to win two more National awards for Tahader Katha (1992) and Swami Vivekananda (1998). He also won the Filmfare award for Best Supporting Actor for Agneepath (1990), holding his own as Krishnan Iyer opposite Amitabh Bachchan’s Vijay Dinanath Chauhan.
In his four-decade career, Chakraborty has appeared in over 350 films, appearing in Bengali, Hindi, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Punjabi films.
Mukherjee has previously written the biographies of actress Hema Malini and actor Sanjay Dutt.
