Salman Khan, Farhan and Zoya Akhtar to back documentary on their dads Salim Khan, Javed Akhtar titled Angry Young Men

A documentary on the rise of the 1970s star writer duo Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar will be produced by their children, actor Salman Khan, actor-director Farhan Akhtar and filmmaker Zoya Akhtar.

Titled Angry Young Men, the project will be co-produced by their banners — Salman Khan Films, Excel Entertainment (co-founded by Farhan and Ritesh Sidhwani) and Tiger Baby Films (co-founded by Zoya and filmmaker Reema Kagti).

The title refers to the moniker given to the star of Salim-Javed films, Amitabh Bachchan, whose persona was that of a youth rebelling against the system in films such as Zanjeer (1973), Deewaar (1975), Sholay (1975), Don (1978) and Trishul (1978).

Editor Namrata Rao, known for Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! (2008), Band Baaja Baaraat (2010), Kahaani (2012), Titli (2014), Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015) and Lust Stories (2018), will be directing the documentary.

Salim-Javed rose to stardom after penning the screenplays of runaway hits like Andaz (1971), Adhikar (1971), Haathi Mere Saathi (1971) and Seeta Aur Geeta (1972).

With the success of films such as Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973), Zanjeer (1973), Deewaar (1975) and Sholay (1975), their star status was firmly cemented. They delivered other popular films such as Don (1978), Trishul (1978), Dostana (1980), Kranti (1981), Zamana (1985) and Mr India (1987).

With 22 Hindi films and two Kannada films under their belt, Salim-Javed eventually split in the 1980s. Their collaboration is often referred to as one of the most successful scriptwriting partnerships in Hindi cinema.
