June song 'Baba': Abhay Jodhpurkar's vocals convey the emotions of this father-son bond

The song, composed by Shalmali with lyrics by Nikhil Mahajan, lacks that signature element needed to raise it a notch.

The relationship between father and son is never an easy one. In Suhrud Godbole and Vaibhav Khisti's June, the relationship forms the core of a troubled individual's struggle with society.

The relationship between the son, played by Siddharth Menon, and his father becomes the theme of the song 'Baba'. Composed by Shalmali, with lyrics by Nikhil Mahajan, the song is pleasant and moving but lacks a signature element to raise it to another level.

The visuals are emotionally powerful and quite on the mark. The father (Kiran Karmarkar) is the strict disciplinarian who has a careful eye on his wandering son. His brand of tough love, while necessary at times, feels authoritarian to the son. The conflicts they result in, and the clashes, push him further away and deeper into his own troubles.

Abhay Jodhpurkar's vocals add a lilting touch to the lyrics by Nikhil Mahajan. The lyrics are simple, almost prosaic, but Jodhpurkar's voice adds a soothing touch to the high emotions in them. Shalmali's composition allows the free-verse lyrics to flow a little smoother with the minimal use of instrumentation. The only issue, perhaps, is the dissonance caused by the lyrical style. Despite that, the emotional tone and visuals of the song strike the right chord.

June, directed by Suhrud Godbole and Vaibhav Khisti, will be streamed on Planet Marathi OTT.
