Despite being one of the most prominent communities in Maharashtra, the Koli community — which resides on the state's west coast — is rarely depicted in mainstream Marathi movies and shows. To make up for this lack of representation, producer Sagar Koli Killekar has decided to make a film titled Yaa Go Dandyavarna, which will showcase the culture of the community.
According to a press release, the producer's late father Kishan Killekar, had come up with the story.
Stating that his goal was to shed light on the community, the producer said, “The Koli community is one of the oldest fishing communities of India that has resided mainly in the coastal areas for more than 500 years. I myself belong to the Koli community. Despite their rich cultural heritage, Kolis have only been known as boatmen and fishermen. People don’t know much about us or our lifestyle. It is a movie so it will have a plot and subplots, but with this film, people will come one step closer to knowing about us.”
He added that the film would be a rib-tickling comedy with thriller elements. "It is a full pack feature film and I am sure the audience is going to love it. I am sure this film is going to be a matter of pride for all of us,” he said.
The project will go on floors in July and the producer will soon announce the cast once the shooting starts.
Yaa Go Dandyavarna is being backed by the Matsya Gandha Production banner. It is being co-produced by Kavita Kini, Savita Apolekar and Girish Malkaar.
