Composed by Anu Malik, the tune captures little of the sensuality or the vocal harmony of the original.

Something about the 1990s triggers nostalgia in millennials. In a film industry where stars are no longer the driving force, and cinema is moving away from the big screen, the music remains the last affirmation of their nostalgia despite the tinkerings of music production companies and new composers. The latest remix comes from Priyadarshan's Hungama 2. Sung by Benny Dayal and Anmol Malik, the song 'Chura Ke Dil Mera 2.0' is a revamped version of the original from Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994).
The original, despite the sensuous supporting visuals of Shilpa Shetty in her prime, was driven by the melodious vocals of Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik. Replacing them are Benny Dayal and Anmol Malik. The composition also has heavy electronic vibes. It gives the song a more contemporary feel but is not an upgrade. The synthesized version feels too artificial and robs the song of freshness.
Meezaan Jaaferi's ostentatious and energetic moves do not elevate the song but he makes up for it with his enthusiasm. Shetty also does her bit, but it is the backup dancers who catch your eye. The lack of coordination is humourous. One only hopes it was intended.
Benny and Anmol's voices bring a different energy and style to the composition. Throw in the upgraded lyrics by Sameer Anjaan, and you have 3/4ths of a new song. The percussion-heavy rhythm adds to the texture of originality. The only problem is the reliance on the original refrain serves as a constant reminder that this is, despite everything, is a remake.
Hungama 2 features Paresh Rawal, Pranitha Subhash and Ashutosh Rana.
The film will be streamed on Disney+ Hotstar on 23 July.
