The only person who can implicate a serial killer in a series of abductions is a visually impaired witness. This is the intriguing premise of Nayanthara's upcoming thriller Netrikann. Written and directed by Milind Rau, the film follows a blind woman who comes across and then battles a murderous psychopath, played by Ajmal Ameer.
The trailer begins predictably with the sneering serial killer boasting about escaping the police's clutches. The only stumbling block he encounters is Nayanthara's character, who suspects his intentions. The challenge both irks and excites him, as he decides to make her his next target.
The only catch is that the woman is not as vulnerable as people think she is. "I may be blind," she says, "But I can see more than others." Incidentally, the title of the film refers to the third eye, the instinct that seems to be driving the heroine.
The trailer is gripping, playing up the drama of a blind woman going up against a cruel murderer. Nayanthara looks on point and captures her character's intensity quite well. Ajmal's antagonist seems to be another smart-alec cinematic serial killer. One hopes there are more twists that are not revealed in the trailer.
Speaking about the film, director Milind Rau said Tamil audiences love a good thriller, and he wanted to create a thriller unlike any other. "Netrikann is special because of the central character who is visually impaired and uses sheer intelligence and presence of mind to confront a deadly serial abductor. No one could have essayed the role better than Nayanthara who has brilliantly brought alive a character who can’t see but is extremely quick-witted."
He added, "High-octane action and drama, along with the unexpected twists in the storyline, makes Netrikann a must-watch, especially for viewers who love a good whodunit packed with crime, thrills and action."
Producer Vignesh Shivan termed the film unconventional and thrilling. “With every film, the goal is to push the envelope further to show audiences something that they haven't seen before, keep them hooked till the credits and provide them with an enriching entertainment experience. We are proud to say that Netrikann is just that. The film is centred on a unique and resilient woman, portrayed by Nayanthara with such elan. As a visually impaired woman, she uses her senses to the best of her abilities to track down a serial killer and uncover hidden truths,” he said.
The film will be released on Disney+ Hotstar on 13 August in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.
