Raj Kundra, accused in porn racket, sent to judicial custody for 14 days

Kundra, businessman and husband of actress Shilpa Shetty, was arrested by the crime branch of the Mumbai police on 19 July.

Businessman Raj Kundra was remanded in 14 days' judicial custody by a local court in Mumbai today.

Kundra was arrested by the crime branch of the Mumbai police on 19 July in connection with a pornography case along with nine others.

Ryan Thorpe, IT head of Kundra's outfit and one of the 10 accused in the case, has also been sent to judicial custody for 14 days.

Kundra, husband of actress Shilpa Shetty, has been booked under sections 292 and 293 of the Indian Penal Code, which deal with the sale of obscene material; sections 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, which concern the transmission of sexually explicit material; and provisions of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.

After his arrest, Kundra was sent to police custody till 23 July, later extended till today. In police custody, suspects are lodged in a police lock-up. They are usually sent to police custody when police seek to interrogate them and courts agree with the need to do so. In judicial custody, suspects are lodged in prison.

Kundra was summoned by police after his name cropped up in the questioning of the other suspects in the case.

Kundra married Shetty in 2009. The latter made her comeback to Hindi cinema just last week with the release of Priyadarshan’s Hungama 2.
