Mimi song 'Rihaayi De': AR Rahman's soothing voice works its magic on the soul

Kriti Sanon's Mimi does have the advantage of an audio soundtrack by the inspirational AR Rahman. The composer has brought out his signature touch by following up the peppy 'Param Sundari' with a soulful, heart-wrenching melody, 'Rihaayi De'. With moving lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya, the song tugs at the heartstrings with its emotional context.
The song is set to the struggle of Mimi's pregnancy. Even as she enters the final stage of her pregnancy, she is faced with the choice of giving up the child. Trapped within her own struggle of not wanting to be a mother and yet being one, she finds herself imprisoned by her own decision.
Kriti Sanon captures the dilemma with her expressions. The small scene of Manoj Pahwa and Supriya Pathak's happy parents preparing to be grandparents only adds to Mimi's heartbreak as it reminds her that the child she carries is not her own.
Through it all are Pankaj Tripathi and Sai Tamhankar's couple offering all the support and love that Mimi deserves. Tripathi has become so comfortable on the screen that you cannot differentiate his behaviour from the character's. His movements and changes are natural, and adorable.
AR Rahman's composition builds on this context. The composition has a touch of jazz to it, as Rahman's voice adds an elegant touch to it. The composition is lightly layered with the rippling build-up that matches the growing intensity in the lyrics. Amitabh Bhattacharya manages to surprise the listener once again with some lovely combinations that express the textured struggle and desire for freedom that seem to engulf Mimi.
Mimi is directed by Laxman Utekar and is slated to be released on Netflix and Jio Cinema on 30 July. Check out the song below and let us know if you are keen on watching the film.
