Actor Parambrata Chatterjee will star in Srijit Mukherji’s upcoming period film Lawho Gouranger Naam Re. Based on the life and teachings of the 15th century religious reformer Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the film will feature Priyanka Sarkar as Lakshmipriya.

Initially, there were rumours that Jisshu Sengupta would play the titular character, as it was his portrayal of the sacred figure in the television series Mahaprabhu that put him on the map. Later, there were discussions about casting Anirban Bhattacharya as Gauranga.

However, according to a report in the Times of India, an English daily, Mukherji never had Sengupta in mind while conceiving the film, but he did consider casting Bhattacharya. “My producer wanted Jisshu in the film for the actor’s mega serial Mahaprabhu connect (sic). I could understand the nostalgia as the serial had a huge impact on Bengali audiences, but Jisshu was never my first choice. Anyway, now things have settled down. Jisshu is not there in the film," said the National award-winning director.

Chatterjee claimed that the director had spoken to him about the film in 2019. The actor said, “Sri Chaitanya is an extremely important character both socially and politically. I had started researching him since then. However, now that the schedule is much clearer, I’ll be able to plan my approach better."

The actor will sing a devotional song in the film and the music will be composed by Kabir Suman.
