Aneek Chaudhuri’s new feature film Jharokh will have its world premiere at the 12th Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM). The 80-minute silent film depicts how challenging circumstances push three women to get of out their shells and find their freedom.
Featuring Husne Shabnam, Usha Banerjee, Ipsita Kundu and Sabuj Barddhan, the film was shot over three years in a village affected by Cyclone Aila.
Chaudhuri said, initially, his intention was to make a documentary. “It was very raw and direct then,” said the maker of Streer Potro (2016), Katti Nrittam (2020) and Cactus (2019). “Later, with the passing of time, I experienced things which made me realize the importance and cons of taking an escape route in life. I don’t prefer it most of the time though” he added.
The 12th edition of IFFM will be held in a hybrid manner this year. While the physical edition will be held from 12 to 20 August, the digital edition will run from 15 to 30 August.
Elated about the film being screened at the festival, the filmmaker said, “Melbourne is home! This festival brings in all the memories and warmth that a filmmaker needs.”
Chaudhuri's first short film, Streer Potro, was premiered at the IFFM in 2011.
“Since this is the world premiere of the film, we are humbled and, at the same time, we are excited to hear the views of the audiences at the film festival,” he added.
