Priyadarshan’s Hungama (2003), which starred Akshaye Khanna, Aftab Shivdasani, Rimi Sen and Paresh Rawal, was a comedy of errors. The film’s sequel seems to contain the same brand of humour.
Rawal, the only cast member from the original film to be retained, reprises the role of Tiwari but the character appears different.
Going by the trailer, Hungama 2 looks like a remake of Priyadarshan’s Malayalam comedy Minnaram (1994). A young man (Meezaan Jaaferi), who stays with his uncle (Ashutosh Rana), gets the shock of his life when his ex-girlfriend (Pranitha Subhash) lands up at his doorstep with a toddler and claims he is the father.
Jaaferi’s character seeks Tiwari’s help in getting rid of the young woman. But Tiwari, who mistakenly believes that the young man has had an affair with his wife (Shilpa Shetty), wants his help to get rid of her from his life.
This isn’t the first time we have seen this screwball humour in a Priyadarshan movie. The problem here is that the trailer doesn’t have a single laugh-out-loud moment. Rawal is a fine choice for such a role but the dialogues and situations are unfunny. Jaaferi seems to be trying a bit too hard to evoke laughter.
Shetty will be seen shaking a leg to her old iconic song ‘Chura Ke Dil Mera’ from Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994). Thankfully, they haven’t remixed the track and used it as it is.
Hungama 2 will be streamed on Disney+ Hotstar from 23 July.
