Producer of Punjabi movie Shooter moves high court, challenges suspension of film's exhibition

The producer of the Punjabi movie Shooter, Kewal Singh, has approached the Punjab and Haryana high court to challenge the suspension of the film’s exhibition. The state governments of Punjab and Haryana had ordered a ban on film with immediate effect earlier this year. 

Based on the life of the notorious gangster Sukha Kahlwan, the film was originally supposed to be titled after the gangster. Kahlwan was involved in several cases of murder, extortion and kidnapping. He was shot dead by another gangster in Jalandhar when he was being taken to jail after a court hearing. It is believed that the film glorifies the criminal.

The daily newspaper The Tribune has reported that Singh has challenged the suspension of the film’s exhibition on the grounds that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has already given the nod for its release. Although the film was supposed to arrive in theatres in November last year, the release was pushed to February 2021.

In April this year, there were reports that the film had been leaked on the internet.
