Mimi trailer: Kriti Sanon, Pankaj Tripathi tackle a surrogacy that goes off the books

The stars are joined by Sai Tamhankar in this cute dramedy that features a young woman who suddenly finds herself raising a child that is not hers.

American couple Summer and John (Evelyn Edwards, Aidan Whytock) ask their Indian driver and tour guide Bhanu (Pankaj Tripathi) to recruit local dancer Mimi (Kriti Sanon) to become their surrogate and deliver their child.

From the trailer, the Laxman Utekar film seems to amp the hilarity as Mimi goes first from being outraged to coming on board. The young woman is initially worried about her figure, but later she has to worry about hiding her condition from her family. Still later, when Summer doesn’t want the child any more, Mimi has to make the important decision of whether to carry the foetus to term or abort it.

Based on the National award-winning Marathi film Mala Aai Vhaychay (2011) by Samruddhi Porey, Utekar's take seems more light-heartened as Tripathi, Sai Tamhankar, Supriya Pathak and Manoj Pahwa join Sanon’s Mimi as she navigates her new reality.

Pathak and Pahwa demand to know who the father of Mimi’s ‘baby’ is and Mimi manages to pass the blame on to Bhanu. But once the light-skinned baby is born, some secrets may become impossible to keep any more.

Tripathi and Sanon, who had earlier shared screen space in Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017) and Luka Chuppi (2019), are fantastic in their scenes together.

The film has been co-written by Utekar, Porey and Rohan Shankar, and features original songs and a background score by Oscar-winner AR Rahman.

Produced by Dinesh Vijan, the film is due to be released on 30 July on Jio Cinema and Netflix. Watch the trailer below and let us know if you are keen to watch the film.
