Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Toofaan has a non-linear structure, with one narrative track playing out in the present era while the other is set in the past.
The song ‘Star Hai Tu’, which was released recently, takes place in a bygone era. Aziz Ali (Farhan Akhtar), who is a boxer, has just tasted initial success, which has been covered in a newspaper. Hence, he, along with his girlfriend (Mrunal Thakur), and friends are seen celebrating his success in the song.
‘Star Hai Tu’ is the kind of a tune that takes time to grow on you but it eventually does. Also, the song is more like a scene where Ali and his goonish friends are depicted having a ball. Hence, it doesn’t have a conventional rhythm. Such songs are expected to be enjoyed more when they are seen in the context of the film.
Veteran composer Javed Akhtar has succeeded in creating poetry out of such a fun number. The music, by the trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, is apt. Singers Siddharth Mahadevan, Himani Kapoor and Divya Kumar bring energy to the number. Akhtar and Thakur look good as a pair and their steps do justice to the music.
The film is the second collaboration between Mehra and Akhtar after the successful and iconic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013), another sports drama.
Toofaan will be released on Amazon Prime Video on 16 July.
