Well-known Malayalam actress Nimisha Sajayan is set to make her Hindi film debut with Onir’s We Are, a sequel to his acclaimed anthology I Am (2011).
Nimisha has gained many admirers outside the South as well in recent times, with her outstanding performances in films like The Great Indian Kitchen (2021) and Nayattu (2021).
The first film saw her play a housewife tormented mentally by her husband and in-laws and how she fights back. In the second, she portrayed a vulnerable yet upright police officer.
Sharing his happiness at the casting, Onir said on Twitter, “Ever since watching The Great Indian Kitchen on Amazon Prime Video, followed by Nayattu, I have been wanting to work with this brilliant and beautiful actor Nimisha Sajayan. Thrilled to be finally working with her soon.”

I Am was a collection of four short films, of which only one was based on homosexuality. But all four stories in We Are will revolve around LGBTQ issues.
In a conversation earlier this year, Onir said, “After what happened in 2018 [the decriminalization of homosexuality], I thought I want to make a film that is my gift to my community celebrating the Supreme Court verdict. So all these films are LGBTQ love stories. At the same time, it highlights the fact that we are being decriminalized by law for sex, but it does not really give us equal civil rights and does not recognize our right to love and live together as partners. This film is all about love and happy stories.”
