Ram Setu isn’t based on a religious issue, says producer Vikram Malhotra

Ram Setu is a bridge mentioned in the epic Ramayana, built to connect the mainland with the island of Lanka ruled by the demon king Ravana. There have been debates about its existence for a long time. So, when Akshay Kumar announced last year that he would be starring in a movie of the same title, most assumed that it was linked to the issue.

But Ram Setu producer Vikram Malhotra of Abunduntia Entertainment has clarified that it is not so. “Who told you Ram Setu is based on a religious issue?" he said in a conversation with Cinestaan. "It’s an action adventure film.”

Asked whether the Abunduntia team was being extra cautious because religious group seem primed to take offence to something or the other these days, he remarked, “You said ‘these days’ this happens. But it’s never a bad time to be sensitive about people’s feelings when you tell a story. We are always being sensitive and cautious.

“If you look at Abunduntia’s films, we never depict women in a bad light. We will never do anything that objectifies women. We will never do anything that goes against children or society. We will never glorify violence. We will never promote superstitions.”

Directed by Abhishek Sharma, Ram Setu also stars Jacqueline Fernandez and Nushrratt Bharuccha. Akshay Kumar plays an archaeologist in the film.
