Zee Theatre has recreated two celebrated plays by legendary playwright Vijay Tendulkar on his 93rd birth anniversary on 6 January.
The plays, Khamosh Adalat Jaari Hai and Sakharam B are adaptations, of his iconic Marathi plays Shantata! Court Chalu Aahe (Silence! the Court is in Session) and Sakharam Binder.
Khamosh Adalat Jaari Hai is about a theatre group that plans to stage a make-believe production in a village. However, things take a dark turn when true stories come out in the open. The play has been directed by Ritesh Menon and stars Nandita Das, Saurabh Shukla, Swanand Kirkire, Yusuf Hussain, Pravina Bhagwat Deshpande, Rajeev Siddhartha, Ajitesh Gupta and Abhay Mahajan. It was aired at 2 pm on Dish and D2H Rangmanch.
Sakharam Binder, one of Tendulkar’s most controversial plays, was staged some forty years ago. Zee Theatre’s modern adaptation of the play sees the titular protagonist caught in a power struggle between two women. The play has been directed by Nikhil Mahajan and stars Nachiket Purnapatre, Anuja Sathe, Chitrangada Chakraborty and Chandrashekhar Dutta. It was aired at 6 pm on Dish and D2H Rangmanch.
Tendulkar's works chiefly dealt with topics such as politics, gender discrimination and social upheaval. He also wrote screenplays for several acclaimed Marathi and Hindi films.
