Veteran actor Raghvendra Kadkol, who appeared in numerous Marathi and Hindi films, plays and serials, died at his residence in Pune on Thursday He was 83.
The actor, who essayed the iconic role of Baba Chamatkar in the hit horror-comedy Zapatlela (1993), also featured in the sequel Zapatlela 2 (2013), which was the first Marathi film shot entirely with a 3D camera.
Kadkol started his acting career in black and white films. He later starred in popular Marathi films such as Choricha Mamla (1976), Chandal Choukadi (1978), Ek Dao Bhutacha (1982), Bahuroopi (1984), Mumbaicha Faujdar (1984), Palva-Palvi (1990), Maherchi Saadi (1991) and many more.
On stage, Kadkol worked with stalwarts such as Kashinath Ghanekar and Sharad Talwalkar. His performance as Dharmappa in the play Ashrunchi Zhali Phule, in particular, received a lot of praise. Kadkol's other popular plays include Dhondi, Devdasi, Hasuya Pan Kaydyachya Kachatyat and Raigadala Jevha Jaag Yete. The actor also wrote a book titled Gold Medal.
For his contribution to Marathi theatre, the actor was conferred the Natwarya Keshav Date Award by the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Parishad two years ago.
Kadkol is survived by his wife, daughter, daughter-in-law and grandchildren.
