It comes as no surprise that the trailer of Sanjay Gupta’s Mumbai Saga is packed with the kind of content that works well in single-screen theatres across the country. The film appears to be a no-holds-barred extravaganza when it comes to action, gunfights, dialoguebaazi, and slow-motion sequences.

Mumbai Saga takes place back when the city was known as Bombay. The film revolves around Amartya Rao (John Abraham), a small-time hooligan who makes it big after shaking hands with a politician (Mahesh Manjrekar). Rao’s stature keeps increasing and he soon comes to rule the city.

In order to stop the gangster in his tracks after his crimes get out of hand, the Bombay police fields inspector Ambar Khan (Emraan Hashmi). The law enforcer is hellbent on eliminating the goon, starting a deadly battle.

Although the trailer aims to please the masses, it also indicates that the film goes overboard when it comes to masala. Abraham’s jarring histrionics at the start put you off. Plus, he constantly reminds you of Manya Surve, his character from Gupta’s Shootout At Wadala (2013)

But Hashmi’s entry salvages things to some extent. He appears impressive in the role of a ruthless yet calm cop who means business.

Mumbai Saga also uses the old trope of a Ganesh visarjan [immersion] scene in order to induce action. However, the Ganesh visrajan song ‘Gajanana’, which is played at various moments, gives you a kick and stays with you.

Check out the trailer and let us know if you are keen on watching the film.
