Actor Aditya Modak has been chosen Best Actor for his role in Chaitanya Tamhane’s Marathi movie The Disciple (2021) at the 18th International Cinephile Awards 2021.

Modak plays a classical music vocalist in the film. Interestingly, he is a classical singer in real life and the film is his acting debut.

The Disciple was also named in the list of 25 Best Films of the Year by the International Cinephile Society. It came in at the 19th position.

The world premiere of the film took place at the 77th edition of the Venice International Film Festival last year. The Disciple won the prestigious FIPRESCI award at the festival, its first major win. This was the first time in 30 years that an Indian film had won the award at Venice. The movie also bagged the Best Screenplay award at the festival.

That’s not all. The Disciple took home the Amplify Voice award at the 45th Toronto International Film Festival last year. It shared the award with the Ivorian film Night Of The Kings.

This is Tamhane’s second film after the internationally acclaimed and Oscar-nominated Court (2015).

The streaming rights to The Disciple have been bagged by Netflix.
