The title of the film refers to the call sign of the late captain, who was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra — the highest award for gallantry in military services in India — for his valour during the Kargil conflict in 1999.
The film, which was shot in 2019 in Kargil, ran into problems with the arrival of the pandemic. Initially scheduled for a 3 July 2020 release, Shershaah is being produced by Dharma Productions and will mark the directorial debut of Vishnuvardhan.
