A metropolitan magistrate's court in Mumbai has summoned actress Kangana Ranaut in connection with the defamation suit filed by writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar.

The summons was issued yesterday after the Juhu police station filed a prima facie inquiry report regarding the case.

The summons was issued by magistrate RR Khan under section 204 of the Criminal Procedure Case. The case has been adjourned till 1 March.

Javed Akhtar had filed a defamation case against Ranaut in November 2020 for making defamatory statements against him on television.

The poet and former parliamentarian was called last month to submit his statement. Following his statement, the police began an initial inquiry to determine if charges could be levelled.

The police report, submitted last week, said Ranaut had defamed Javed Akhtar.

Responding to the summons, Ranaut tweeted, "A group of jackals and one lioness."

The actress is also battling a notice issued by Mumbai's municipal authorities about ''illegal alterations'' in flats owned by her.
