18th edition of Chennai International Film Festival begins


The event is being held from 18-25 February.

The 18th edition of the Chennai International Film Festival (CIFF) was inaugurated on Thursday, with organizers screening Stéphane Demoustier's The Girl with the Bracelet.

The festival, which will conclude on 25 February, is being organised by the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation (ICAF) in association with PVR cinemas.

According to a report in The Hindu newspaper, the inaugural ceremony was attended by Katharina Görgen, director, Goethe-Institut, Chennai; Young-seup Kwon, consul-general, Republic of Korea; Karin Christina Maria Stoll, consul-general, Federal Republic of Germany; Lise Talbot Barré, consul-general of France in Puducherry and Chennai; and Bruno Plasse, director, Alliance Francaise, among others. The organizers also shared videos from the inauguration that showed delegates speaking at the event. 

The publication also reported the vice-chairman of the festival, D Ramakrishnan, as saying, “The support we have received from the state government, film lovers and various embassies in the city have made this festival possible.”

The organizers will screen 91 films from 53 countries during the course of the festival. The film categories include World Cinema, Indian Panorama, Retrospective and Country Focus. In addition, there is a Tamil film competition. A total of thirteen films have been selected as part of this section.

In addition to the film screenings, CIFF will be conducting master classes on various aspects of filmmaking. These will be conducted by members of the Tamil film industry.
