Rani (Pooja Bhatt), Lily (Amruta Subhash), Fatima (Shahana Goswami), Ayesha (Plabita Borthakur), and Shai (Aadhya Anand), the five women at the centre of Bombay Begums, are trying their best to exist and fulfil their dreams in a patriarchal society.
Rani is the head of a bank and she struggles to form a bond with her rebellious stepdaughter Shai while Fatima and Ayesha work for Rani, and both try to balance their ambitions and their personal lives. Lily, a bar dancer, crosses paths with Rani when her son is injured in a car accident.
Each woman has hopes and dreams but comes up against some obstacle or the other as they struggle to survive in Mumbai. Will they succeed in becoming ‘queens’ of the city or will they be another footnote in the city's history?
The series, created by Alankrita Shrivastava, will likely explore these threads when it premieres on Netflix on International Women’s Day, 8 March. Bombay Begums also stars Rahul Bose, Danish Husain, Vivek Gomber and Manish Chaudhari as the men who create the said obstacles for the queens in the series.
