Actor Dhanush took to the microblogging site Twitter yesterday to announce that his upcoming Tamil film Karnan (2021) will be released in cinemas this April.
Dhanush made the announcement amidst rumours that his forthcoming release Jagame Thandhiram (2021) will be premiered on Netflix India, skipping a theatrical release.
Following a rumoured falling out with the producer of Jagame Thandhiram, Dhanush went ahead and announced the release of Karnan.
Bankrolled by Kalaipuli S Thanu, Karnan features Malayalam actress Rajisha Vijayan as the leading lady while Yogi Babu will be seen in a key role. The film marks the maiden collaboration of Dhanush with filmmaker Mari Selvaraj.
Recently, some reports have suggested that Karnan is based on a caste riot that took place in Kodiyankulam in Tamil Nadu back in 1991. However, the director is yet to confirm or deny this.
In a recent report, the Cinema Express website quoted Selvaraj as saying, "Dhanush gave me the chance to work with him after watching Pariyerum Perumal (2018). Just like my first film, this one will address an important issue."
The project went on the floor last January. When the project was announced last year, Dhanush had said he was so excited to work with a talent like Mari Selvaraj.
Meanwhile, Dhanush recently wrapped up shooting for the Karthik Subbaraj-directed action thriller Jagame Thandhiram.
The film sees Dhanush play a gangster. Recently, pictures of Dhanush with a handlebar moustache from the sets of the film went viral on social media. It is rumoured that Dhanush will be seen in this look in the flashback portion of the movie.
The project, the maiden collaboration of Dhanush and Karthik, was shot predominantly in London apart from a few other places in the United Kingdom.
The film features Aishwarya Lekshmi as the leading lady. Last October, the makers announced that they had roped in Braveheart (1995) and HBO series Game Of Thrones fame actor James Cosmo for a pivotal role.
