The trailer of Bratya Basu’s upcoming film Dictionary depicts the lead characters' attempts to discover the true meaning of relationships. While the trailer partly reveals the storyline involving Nusrat Jahan, Abir Chatterjee and Arna Mukhopadhyay's characters, it is hard to guess how Mosharraf Karim’s story unfolds.
Interestingly the Bangladeshi actor, who plays a businessman in the film, gets much more screen space in the trailer than Chatterjee and his character seems to be going through a financial crisis in the film. While forest officer Ashoke (Chatterjee) seems to be a passive observer of the love affair between his wife Smita (Jahan) and Suman (Mukhopadhyay), Karim’s layered performance makes the narrative more than a simple story about infidelity and marital strife.
For the most part, Karim appears to be irritated about his son’s behaviour and lack of business acumen. The trailer leaves it to the audience to figure out the connection between Karim’s crisis and that of Smita and Ashoke. Evidently, the film depicts the manner in which extramarital affairs impact the lives of all parties involved but also how women are solely blamed for infidelity.
While neither her married life nor the affair seems to lift Smita's spirits, Ashoke does his best to be sensitive to Smita’s issues and be responsible as a husband. The trailer ends with him looking up the meaning of the word ‘husband’ in the dictionary and scoffing at the definition which bears little resemblance to his relationship with his spouse.
Dictionary, which features a background score by Prabuddha Banerjee, is slated to be released on 12 February.
