The trailer for Gowtam Tinnanuri’s Jersey (2021) showed the deteriorating relationship between lead actor Shahid Kapoor's character and his wife, played by Mrunal Thakur, after the former becomes a ‘failed’ cricketer.
But we were also shown visuals of the past when the couple was in a deeply loving relationship, when Kapoor’s character was a promising cricketer. The song ‘Maiyya Mainu’ is set in that period.
With the song set in a bygone day, one can notice the period details in the production design, clothes and incidents like the young woman meeting the guy secretly and he turning up in her bedroom all of a sudden.
The song starts with a romantic yet funny discussion and ends with the couple getting married in court. Kapoor and Thakur do well as a young couple deeply in love.
The track suits the love story portrayed on screen. Sachet Tandon does a fine job of performing both the high- and low-pitched portions. Shellee’s poetry is a simple but an effective mixture of Punjabi and Hindi. Sachet-Parampara’s composition is satisfactory.
Jersey is the Hindi remake of Tinnanuri’s Telugu film of the same name released in 2019. It tells the story of a broke former cricketer who wants to buy an expensive jersey for his son.
Jersey will be released in theatres on 31 December. Watch the 'Maiyya Mainu' song below and let us know if you are keen to watch the film
