On the 65th death anniversary today of legendary reformer and chief architect of the Indian Constitution Dr Bhimrao Ramji 'Babasaheb' Ambedkar, the streaming platform Baba Play announced a Hindi biopic series.
Titled Ambedkar: The Legend, the web-series will see veteran Marathi actor Vikram Gokhale essaying the role of Ambedkar.
Gokhale said, “It is an honour to play the role of one of India’s most influential figures. He is my personal icon and I take the responsibility to do justice to his personality through my work. I am also looking forward to making a mark on the OTT space as this is where my audience is migrating today. What Baba Play is doing in the space of informative entertainment is also a great measure to connect our youth with our history.”
Along with the first look from the series, the makers shared a trailer as well. Going by the first look and trailer, however, Gokhale seems to resemble Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar more than Ambedkar. It will be interesting to see if the actor is able to pull off this difficult role, especially the part of the younger Ambedkar.
Ambedkar: The Legend is written, directed and produced by Sanjivv Jaiiswwal, who had recently announced the film Quota: The Reservation, which is based on the real-life story of a Dalit student.
Jaiiswwal believes his social media and entertainment platform Baba Play will become a platform to take Ambedkarite thoughts to the world. "Our nation is moving towards a more equitable and inclusive culture because one man started a movement that led us on this path," he said. "As a tribute to his ideology, we have created India’s first-ever social media platform dedicated to Ambedkarites. This will be the instrument of massive change. ‘Ambedkar: The Legend’ is not just an entertainment series, it is a tribute to the greatness of this reformative leader’s work.”
