After witnessing a poor first weekend and Monday at the box office, the fate of Kabir Khan’s 83 has been sealed. And, as expected, the sports drama has finished its first week with an underwhelming Rs68.21 crore nett, as per figures shared by the trade website BoxOfficeIndia.com.
In fact, 83’s first-week earnings are lower than that the first-weekend figure of Rohit Shetty's action film Sooryavanshi (2021), which was also released on a big holiday.
The Ranveer Singh-starrer did manage to hold decently on the weekdays but its numbers are too paltry to have any sort of impact on the film's overall box office collection. As was the trend in the first few days, 83 found most of its audience in metros while it struggled at smaller centres and towns.
The only solace for the makers of the period film is that the Shahid Kapoor-starrer Jersey was not released today. Else, it would have taken up a lot of screens that were allotted to 83. With the New Year weekend, there is a chance for the makers to salvage their pride to an extent, although the film, which was made on a budget of Rs200 crore has no chance of breaking even.
Meanwhile, the Hindi version of Pushpa: The Rise fared well in its second week and amassed Rs20 crore, taking the total earnings of the film in this language to Rs46.91 crore.
The Hollywood movie Spider-Man: No Way Home earned a whopping Rs41.50 crore in its second week. The blockbuster seems on course to mint Rs200 crore at the Indian box office.
