Jayy Randhawa’s controversial Punjabi-language feature Shooter has finally been given a release date. The film, which will arrive in theatres on 14 January 2022, is based on the life of the notorious gangster Sukha Kahlwan, who was involved in cases of murder, extortion and kidnapping. He was shot dead by another gangster in Jalandhar when he was being taken to jail after a court hearing.

In February 2020, the state governments of Punjab and Haryana had ordered an immediate ban on the film. The former chief minister of Punjab, Amarinder Singh, had openly condemned Shooter, stating that it “promotes violence, heinous crimes, extortion, threats and criminal intimidation”.

The producer of the film, Kewal Singh, later approached the Punjab and Haryana high court to challenge the suspension of the film’s exhibition. Shooter was to be premiered in November last year, but its release had been postponed to February 2021.

Randhawa shared a poster of the film announcing the release date. He also thanked God and the judicial system for making the release of the film possible.

Directed by Tru Makers, the film stars Randhawa, Vadda Grewal, Swaalina and is written by Wahid Brothers. The cinematographer is Gagan Randhawa and dialogues are by Gurpreet Bhullar.
