The Anupam Kher-starrer The Kashmir Files (2022) is set for release on Republic Day, two days ahead of the scheduled release of John Abraham's sci-fi action thriller Attack (2022).
The makers shared the first motion poster for the film which features veteran actor Kher's heartfelt voice-over as he narrates how the land of Kashmir once belonged to Hindu gods, goddesses, saints, seers and sadhus.
As he years for 'his' Kashmir, we see the text 'Article 370 Hatao Kashmir Bachao' — Annul Article 370, save Kashmir — which suggests that the film will also touch upon the controversial provision in the Constitution of India which was read down even more controversially by the present government on 5 August 2019.
In the film Kher plays Pushkar Nath Pandit, a retired professor of philosophy from Srinagar who lives with his son, daughter-in-law and two grandsons. On the night of 19 January 1990, he has to flee Kashmir. What happens next forms the crux of the story.
Written and directed by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, the film also stars Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Kumaar, Pallavi Joshi, Bhasha Sumbli and Chinmay Mandlekar.
According to the makers, the film shows the struggle and trauma of the Kashmiri Pandit community and raises questions about democracy, religion, politics and humanity.
The Kashmiri Files is the second collaboration between Zee Studios and Agnihotri after The Tashkent Files (2019) which went on to win the National award.
