Writing With Fire, which was premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and won two awards there, has been nominated in the Outstanding Producer of Documentary Motion Pictures category at the 33rd annual Producers Guild Awards.

Directed and produced by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh, the documentary feature follows journalists from Khabar Lahariya, the country’s only newspaper run by Dalit women.

The Indian documentary has been nominated alongside Jessica Kingdon’s Ascension, Matt Heineman’s The First Wave, Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s Flee, Nanfu Wang’s In The Same Breath, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin’s The Rescue, Megan Mylan’s Simple As Water and Ahmir Thompson aka Questlove’s Summer Of Soul (…Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised).

Rintu Thomas shared the nomination news, saying she had to pinch herself to make sure it’s real.

This is the first category of nominees that the PGA jury has announced. The nominees for Outstaniding Sports, Children’s, and Short-Form Television Programmes will be revealed on 13 January 2022, while the eagerly awaited nominees for Theatrical Motion Pictures, Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures, Television Series/Specials and Televised/Streamed Motion Pictures will be revealed on 27 January 2022.

The nomination for the PGA award increases a documentary's chances at an Oscar nomination. Several winners of this category have also gone on to win the Oscar as well. The guild has around 8,000 members who will vote on the categories; the awards ceremony will be held on 26 February 2022.
