Raajhorshee De’s multi-starrer film Abbar Kanchenjungha will be released on 11 February next year.
Conceived as a tribute to the late Satyajit Ray, the film features Arpita Chatterjee, Bidipta Chakraborty, Gaurav Chakrabarty, Kaushik Sen, Saswata Chatterjee, Tanushree Chakraborty, Anindya Chatterjee and Rahul Banerjee. The film was initially supposed to be released this year to mark Ray's birth centenary.
The film narrates the story of the Deb family which reunites at Christmas at its ancestral mansion Abhilash in Darjeeling. Several conflicts surface as the four sons and one daughter of the late advocate Nisith Deb arrive with their respective families.
The arguments lead to a proposal to sell the house; a significant member of the family rescues it, however, by helping the others find their roots with the existence of Abhilash and solve their interpersonal problems.
"It's a complete family film celebrating nostalgia, Bangaliana, Christmas celebrations in the enchanting location of Darjeeling with Kanchenjungha as the backdrop," De told the English daily The Times of India.
De said he wanted to tell the story of a family which still believes in magic and miracles, still celebrates the nostalgia of being together, eating together and spending Christmas together. “Films like Kanchanjungha (1962) and Utsab (2000) inspired me a lot to tell this story,” De said.
