While new Hindi films like Bell Bottom and Chehre are struggling at the box office, two Punjabi movies, Chal Mera Putt 2 (2020) and Puaada (2021), are raking in impressive numbers in ticket sales.
Chal Mera Putt 2, which was re-released on Friday 27 August, made an impressive Rs1.55 crore nett on Sunday, according to BoxOfficeIndia.com. Directed by Janjot Singh and starring Amrinder Gill and Simi Chahal, the movie has scored a very good Rs3.71 crore in its first three days in theatres in its second coming.
Chal Mera Putt 2 was initially released in March 2020 for three days, after which it had to be taken down because theatres in Punjab and several other states were shut in the wake of rising COVID-19 cases. Then came the countrywide shutdown announced by the prime minister and theatres only began reopening in October that year. But even in those three days, Chal Mera Putt 2 had made a good collection of Rs2.92 crore. The film’s grand total thus stands at Rs6.63 crore as of 29 August.
Meanwhile, Puaada, which was released on 12 August, collected a decent Rs45 lakh nett on its third weekend. Starring Ammy Virk and Sonam Bajwa, the movie collected Rs3.89 crore and Rs1.85 crore in its first two weeks in theatres. Its grand total currently stands to Rs6.19 crore.
Both the Punjabi films have succeeded at the box office despite the 50% occupancy rule. According to BoxOfficeIndia.com, Puaada has also made an impressive earning in the overseas market, where its total stands at about Rs9 crore.
