Marathi playwright and theatre critic Jayant Pawar dies at 61

Famous Marathi playwright and theatre critic Jayant Pawar died on 29 August in Mumbai. He was 61.

Pawar had fallen ill the day before and was taken to the hospital. However, he died while receiving treatment for his ailment. He is survived by his wife, journalist and writer Sandhya Nare, and his daughter.

Pawar won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2012 for his book Phoenixchya Rakhetun Uthala Mor [The Peacock rises from the Ashes of the Phoenix]. He also won the best writer award at a competition organized by the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Parishad for his famous play Kay Danger Vara Sutlay. His other famous work include the plays Adhantar, Darkveshi, Paulkhuna and Majhe Ghar.

In 2010, Adhantar was adapted as Lalbaug Parel, which was directed by Mahesh Manjrekar. The film explores the lives of Mumbai mill workers who were rendered jobless in the 1980s.

He also wrote the screenplay for the Marathi film Ticha Umbertha (2016), which was again based on Majhe Ghar, as well as that of the Hindi film It's Breaking News (2007).

Pawar began his career as a theatre critic in 1986 for the film magazine Chanderi. Later, he wrote for newspapers such as Aapla Mahanagar, Maharashtra Times and Loksatta. His last collection of stories, Mori Neend Nasani Hoy, was published in 2015.
