Laabam, which stars Vijay Sethupathi and Shruti Haasan, has finally got a release date. The Tamil political thriller helmed by late National award-winning director SP Jananathan will be out in theatres on 9 September.

Sharing the news on Wednesday, Vijay tweeted, “Laabam Grand Release On September 9th in Theaters Near You (sic).”

The film will clash with Kangana Ranaut's multi-lingual biopic Thalaivii, which is scheduled to be released on 10 September.

Laabam sees Vijay essay the role of an activist who fights for the rights of farmers who are oppressed by a capitalist played Jagapathi Babu. The film features Sai Dhanshika, Ramesh Thilak, Prithvi Rajan and Jai Varma.

SP Jananathan died of a cardiac arrest in March.  Laabam was scheduled to be released on 13 May and the makers had even released the trailer and two songs, but because of the second wave of COVID-19, the release had to be postponed. Co-produced by Vijay's own banner Vijay Sethupathi Productions, the film is also being backed by 7 C's Entertainment.

Interestingly, Vijay's other film, Tughlaq Durbar, will have its television premiere on Sun TV on 10 September. The actor will also be seen in Kamal Haasan’s Vikram and Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal.
