Actress Shilpa Shetty has put out a statement requesting privacy in view of the controversy surrounding her husband, Raj Kundra, who has been arrested in connection with a pornography racket. The artiste herself has filed a suit against several social media platforms and publications for putting out 'defamatory' articles.

The actress expressed resentment about the treatment being meted out to her family in the statement, which read, "Yes! The past few days have been challenging, on every front. There have been a lot of rumours and accusations. A lot of unwarranted aspersions on me cast by the media and (not so) well-wishers as well. A lot of trolling/questions posed...not only to me but also to my family.

"MY STAND...I HAVE NOT COMMENTED YET and will continue to refrain from doing so on this case as it is sub judice, so please stop attributing false quotes on my behalf."

Stating that she has complete faith in the judiciary and Mumbai police, the actress said she "will ascribe to all legal remedies available".

"But, till then, I humbly request you - especially as a MOTHER - to respect our privacy for my children's sake and request you to refrain from commenting on half-baked information without verifying the veracity of the same. Most importantly, I request you to respect my family's and my right to privacy in these times. We don't deserve a media trial. Please let the law take its course," the statement read.

Kundra has been in the custody of Mumbai police since 19 July.

Shetty and Kundra's company, Viaan Industries, has also been fined by SEBI (Securities Exchange Bureau of India) for violating insider trading norms. While the Bombay high court, in response to the actress's defamation suit, directed that some of the content posted online by news publications be taken down, it refused to pass a blanket gag order.

Some prominent names in the industry have demanded that the actress's right to privacy be respected.

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta on Sunday took to Twitter to ask people to leave Shetty alone. He wrote, "If you cannot stand up for her at least leave Shilpa Shetty alone and let the law decide? Allow her some dignity and privacy. It is unfortunate that people in public life ultimately are left to fend for themselves and are proclaimed guilty even before justice is meted out."

Richa Chadha also backed Shetty, tweeting, "We've made a national sport out of blaming women for the mistakes of the men in their lives. Glad she's suing."
