Anthology season continues and the newest one on the block focuses once again on relationships and the devastation they can cause. Netflix’s Ankahi Kahaniya (2021) comprises three different stories by filmmakers Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, Abhishek Chaubey and Saket Chaudhary who each bring their own spin to it.
In Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari’s story, Abhishek Banerjee is a migrant worker, Pradeep, who has come to the big city to make a life for himself. Working in a garment shop, his only friend is a mannequin that he names Pari and forms an unbreakable connection with her, much to the chagrin of everyone around him.
Chaubey’s segment, set in the 1990s, deals with two youngsters who connect while watching movies from the projection booth of a single-screen theatre. Played by Rinku Mahadeo Rajguru and Dellzad Hiwale, the couple has an easy friendship set against the backdrop of the big city that could possibly lead to more.
Finally, in Saket Chaudhary’s story, a couple (Kunal Kapoor and Zoya Hussain) discuss the dissolution of the relationship. While Kapoor seems more pragmatic about it, Hussain’s character has a hard time walking away. Nikhil Dwivedi and Palomi Ghosh also play key parts that are yet unknown to the plot.
Each of the stories explores themes of loneliness and human connections. Ankahi Kahaniya, produced by RSVP Movies, is due to be released on Netflix on 17 September.
