The horror-comedy genre has been making waves in mainstream Hindi cinema in recent times, fuelled by the success of Amar Kaushik’s Stree (2018). Director Pavan Kirpalani’s Bhoot Police is simply the latest in the line.
Going by the trailer for the film, which has just been released, Saif Ali Khan and Arjun Kapoor are siblings and professional occult practitioners who help people deal with their supernatural problems. Their team is called ‘Bhoot Police’.
Kapoor’s character takes the profession seriously and believes in the existence of the supernatural. Khan's character, on the other hand, is a non-believer who looks at the profession merely as a money-making business.
One day, two young women, played by Jacqueline Fernandez and Yami Gautam, approach the brothers with an assignment. Yami’s character is certain that a witch is causing havoc for her. Bhoot Police tries to help her out in its own ways.
The trailer offers enough indication that a lot of work has gone into the production design and costumes to make the scenario believable. Khan appears to do justice to the playboy character while Kapoor seems suitable as the foil.
But the situations and dialogues don’t elicit a lot of laughs, which is always vital for comedic movie trailers. The viewer is also bombarded with far too many scenes in the under-three-minute trailer.
Produced by Tips Industries and 12th Street Entertainment, Bhoot Police will be streamed from 17 September on Disney+ Hotstar. Check out the trailer and let us know if you are keen to watch the film.
