Actress Meera Mitun was arrested over the weekend for making derogatory remarks against members of the Scheduled Castes (SC). Last week, she was booked on the basis of a complaint filed by Vanni Arasu, the leader of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, a Dalit-centric party.
On Saturday, the actress was apprehended by the police in Kerala. Minutes before her arrest, a video clip surfaced on social media in which she can be seen screaming her lungs out, alleging that she was being harassed by the police. She also threatened to kill herself if the police laid hands on her. Meera even appealed to Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin and prime minister Narendra Modi in the video, requesting them to help her.
Last week, the actress put up a video in which she complained about a director allegedly stealing her picture and using it for a movie's first look. She then used a derogatory term and claimed that all Scheduled Caste members were involved in criminal and illegal activities and that this was the reason that they face problems. Meera stated that all Scheduled Caste directors and figures in the Tamil film industry must be chucked out.
As per reports, cases were filed under sections 153, 153A(1)(a), 505(1)(b) and 505 (2) of the Indian Penal Code and several sections of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Meera has played minor roles in a few Tamil films. She also participated in the third season of the Tamil version of Bigg Boss.
