Producer Anand Pandit has announced that his film Chehre will finally be released in theatres on 27 August.

Starring Amitabh Bachchan and Emraan Hashmi, the film was earlier set to be released in April this year, but then the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic struck and the plan had to be scrapped.

Pandit has repeatedly said that he wanted Chehre to be released in theatres. “There was no doubt in my mind that this is a film meant for a theatrical release," the producer said in a statement. "Chehre is not just thematically strong but has a certain grandeur that deserves the immersive magic of the big screen.

"I have grown up watching blockbusters in theatres and to watch Mr Bachchan on the big screen in one of my productions would be beyond thrilling. This is also my 51st production and I wanted to make its release a special occasion for the cast, the crew and the audiences. The film will now be released all over the world on 27 August and I couldn't be happier.”

Pandit added that by releasing Chehre, he aims to help lakhs of people who have faced losses due to theatres being shut for long. “What can be better than to go back to the theatres with an Amitabh Bachchan film?" he said. "The industry is a family that has suffered a lot in this pandemic, but I believe we can survive anything if we stand by each other. So bringing Chehre to theatres is my way of standing by over 10 lakh people who are associated with the industry in some way or another.”

Theatres have reopened for business with certain restrictions in various parts of India, but there has been no official announcement yet about cinema halls in Maharashtra, the country's biggest film centre.

Pandit is hoping people turn up in large numbers for the film. “The teasers and trailer have already received so much love from the audience," he said, "and I hope they come back [to theatres] to watch the film with the same enthusiasm. Their love will not just mean a lot to me but to the exhibitors and the extended family of workers who need sustenance and support.”

Directed by Rumy Jafry, Chehre also features Annu Kapoor, Krystle D’Souza, Raghuvir Yadav, Dhritiman Chatterjee, Siddhanth Kapoor and Rhea Chakraborty.
