The teaser for SonyLIV's upcoming web-series Maharani begins with a radio announcement about Bihar chief minister Bheema Babu (Sohum Shah) resigning from his post.
In the teaser, we also meet Huma Qureshi’s character Rani Bharti, a homemaker and wife of the chief minister. All she cares about is her home and her husband. After he quits, she wants them to pack their bags and go back to their native village.
Meanwhile, Bheema Babu's party members are eagerly waiting to see whom he chooses as his successor. Leaving aside all the senior and loyal members of his party, Bheema Babu chooses his illiterate wife Rani Bharti.
The short teaser for the political drama works as an introduction to Rani Bharti's character and doesn't reveal much about the plot. However, given that the political drama is loosely based on the life of Bihar's first and so far only woman chief minister Rabri Devi, wife of Rashtriya Janata Dal founder Lalu Prasad, the plot is not a great mystery.
In 1997, Rabri Devi became chief minister when Lalu Prasad was indicted in the fodder scam and had to resign. Many believed this was his way of holding on to power in the state. Without any formal education and with little interest in politics, Rabri Devi went on to serve as chief minister until 2005.
Subhash Kapoor is the showrunner and producer of the web-series while Naren Kumar is his co-producer. Karan Sharma has directed the series. This is the second time Subhash Kapoor is working with Qureshi after Jolly LLB 2 (2017).
